Enope Squid Quintet Series
This deep water squid rarely seen in NZ waters is a photographers favourite due to its tendency to 'Strike a pose' as the photographer approaches.
Poor Knights Islands
A Dive Less Ordinary
A selection of the rarities seen at the Poor knights Islands over the past few years. None are 'ordinary'!
Poor Knights Islands
Blanket Octopus Quintet Series
A very rare sighting at the Poor Knights Islands. This pelagic octopus is almost never seen by divers. This small individual was hiding under a salp raft at around 1-2 metres depth. One amazing thing about juvenile blanket octopus is their defence strategy! They will actually hunt down a Man o' War and steal the stinging tentacles and then brandish them and wave them around as weapons to defend off any predators. You can see these in the images as very fine strands from it's arms. This one actually managed to 'whip' me with one of them!
Poor Knights Islands
Gold Flyingfish Quintet Series
A juvenile flyingfish close to the Poor Knights Islands. I see these small flying fish over the summer months and are a classic sign to me of a good, warm summer!
Poor Knights Islands
Argonaut/ Paper Nautilus Quintet Series
Adult female Argonauts from blackwater dives off the Poor Knights Islands. Although their broken egg cases may be a fairly common seasonal sight, alive Argonauts are very rarely seen.
Poor Knights Islands
Crimson Jelly/ Turritopsis rubra Quintet Series
These tiny jellies are only about the size of your little finger nail but can seasonally be quite abundant. They are closely related to the 'Immortal Jellyfish' which has been shown to be able to 'reverse' its life cycle and revert back to a polyp stage if it encounters adverse conditions, it theory making it immortal!
